Dear Parents:

I would like to welcome you and your students to Manteo High School. I will review both the curriculum for the program and the opportunities your students can look forward to in the coming year.

One of the big opportunities that all students will continue to have is their involvement in the on-going portfolio project through their English classes. Our students will maintain works-in-progress folders from which a number of final pieces will be selected to make up their year-end portfolio projects that will follow them into their next academic year. The goal of the portfolio project is to create strong writers within our system who will produce a finished product that will reflect their personal and academic growth and may be used by prospective employers and colleges for assessment purposes. Our school system, to that end, encourages community and civic volunteers to read and comment on many of our student portfolios and make comments and suggestions for improvement. Other schools are already undergoing this review process, and MHS will likely soon experience the same assessment procedures. Also, students of MHS will soon have the opportunity to take their portfolio to the digital world. If any of you would like to be portfolio readers, please contact me via the e-mail. The agreement stipulates that you will allow your student’s work to be shared with the understanding that all work remains the property of the student writer. Digital and hard copy sharing may remain anonymous upon stipulation. The class grade of the final portfolio will in no way be affected by the outside review process. Grading the finished portfolio remains the sole responsibility of the classroom teacher.

Once again, I look forward to meeting and working with you all this year! Please feel free to contact me through our school e-mail (vogtba@dare.k12.nc.us) or by phone at (252-261-4251). Check information posted daily at http://www.vogt.wikispaces.com. See you soon!

Sincerely,
